AUR Wolves 2, Foro Italico 1

The wolves played their best game yet in a 2-1 victory over Foro Italico as the team fought to reach the semifinals in the final game of playoff pool play. Unfortunately, they came up short and will not be advancing. Although AUR finished level on points with Foro Italico and Link, the women were knocked out because their regular season standing left them on the outside of the tiebreaker.

The performance was a major improvement from last week, when AUR struggled in a heartbreaking loss to Link Erasmus. The match was a defensive battle between AUR and Foro Italico, with only nine total shots on goal between the two teams. This was thanks to an outstanding job by our goalkeeper Morgan Rademacher, who made multiple tough saves to keep the score low and preserve AUR’s lead.

AUR got off to a hot start when Greta Bair scored on a penalty kick within the first five minutes of the game. The team carried that momentum throughout the match, and Leatlie Kelly scored another goal about two-thirds of the way through. AUR held Foro Italico scoreless until the final moments of the game.

This was a must win, high stakes game for AUR because a victory would put the team in a three way tiebreaker with two other teams it had lost to during the regular season. That meant AUR not only needed to win, but also needed a strong performance to improve their chances of advancing to the semifinals.

The defense played their hearts out, barely letting anyone get by them. On top of the defense’s performance, the midfielders did a great job maintaining possession and pressing the other team.
